Produce is affordable!

Aug 18, 2014

Think you can’t get much produce on a tight budget? We think otherwise!

Look How Much Produce $10 Can Buy

Here are some tips to make shopping for produce more easy and affordable:

  • Don’t shop when you’re hungry and carry a list. You’ll be more likely to stick to your budget and nutritious food choices.
  • Look for washed and bagged salads, baby carrots, celery hearts, broccoli and cauliflower crowns, cherry tomatoes, and shredded cabbage in your grocery store.
  • The good news about fruits and veggies in Canada is that we have access to a wide range of fresh produce year round thanks to improved growing, storage and transportation systems. If you’d like to know more about the availability of specific produce, CPMA’s Availability Guide will help. Use it to plan your meals and your next trip to the grocery store.
  • Buy fresh produce, like peaches or bananas, in varying degrees of ripeness to allow for some ripening towards the end of the week.
  • Canned and frozen vegetables can be convenient choices.
  • Spend most of your time in the produce, bread, meat and dairy sections
  • Use store flyers to help you find specials.

Is that spam in the comment below? lol

Besides that… I always hear that it isn’t the best choice to buy frozen/canned veggies and fruits. I’m from the USA so I don’t know if that makes a difference but I really wonder, is it that bad to buy frozen? But you mention that it is cheaper and I take as it is ok to buy them that way. Do you think people are just trying to scare people out of buying frozen/canned?

Frozen is better than canned because they add sugar to canned fruit and the plastic liner in cans is bad for you. Canned veggies has salt and preservatives to keep the veggies fresh. They say frozen veggies can be fresher than store fresh veggies as the veggies are froze right after being picked. Fresh can be picked too early to ripen on the road. I hope this helps!
