Veggie of the month: Cauliflower!
Cauliflower is our wonderfully versatile vegetable of the month! Did you know that cauliflower is available in white, orange, green and purple? White is most common but any of the other varieties would add lots of colour to your dinners. When buying cauliflower, look for heads that are white, firm and heavy for their size with no marks on the florets or leaves. The leaves should be crisp, bright and green. Cauliflower will keep for about 5 days but use it as soon after you purchase as you can. Whole cauliflower keeps much better than cut cauliflower.

If you’re feeling adventurous, cauliflower curry is a spicy warm dish that’s great for those chilly winter nights. Vegetable-based curries work well with a variety of produce, so don’t be afraid to try different variations depending on what’s in season. Locally grown cauliflower is available from June to November but you are able to purchase it all year long in the supermarket. To top it all off…a half cup of raw cauliflower only has 55 calories! Cauliflower is an excellent source of Vitamin C and a good source of folate. Cauliflower is a cruciferous vegetable and contains many phytochemicals that help lower the risk of certain types of cancer and heart disease. A great veggie to feature during heart month!
